What is good YouTube, it’s that1cameraguy, back at it again with another video. In this episode we take a look at the Sony a6500 smallrig cage and find out if its any good. Lets jump into it.
I recently picked the cage up. I got it in less than a week when they started shipping. I think everyone uses the smallrig cage for different reasons. Some of you mentioned that you buy one just to protect your camera. I think that’s a really great reason, especially if you spent over a $1000 buying a camera, you want it to feel secure. Furthermore the cage helps add rigidity to the entire camera.
So the a6500 smallrig cage is very similar in dimensions and size as it’s previous models. This particular one is designed in a way to finally allow access to the C1 and C2 buttons as well as free access to the battery/memory card door compartment. One new feature on this cage is the addition of the Nato rail on the side. I don’t have any accessories to demonstrate this, but it will allow you to easily mount a handle on this side. I’m sure someone can chime in below to add more details on this. Other than that, it’s a really well constructed cage and you’ll be happy with it.
I have been getting some questions asking whether or not the older models work on this particular cage. When mounting the Sony a6000 onto the cage, it does seem a little off center. I have trouble trying to mount evenly as the strap mounting point interferes with the cage. Furthermore, access to the battery/memory card door compartment does work, but it depends how you mount the actual camera to the cage.
When mounting the a6300 to the a6500 cage, it does fit much better. The only caveat is that you can’t open the battery/memory card door slot on the camera. So if accessing that is important to you, then this is a bust.
Well folks, that’s all I’ve got for you in this video. The question I want to ask is, did you already get your cage? Is it on the way? What did you think of it. Let me know down in the comment section below so we can continue the conversation there.
Don’t forget I’m on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, where you can hit me, see behind the scene content, and just find out what I’m up to for the channel.
With that said, I’m your host that1cameraguy, and I’ll see you on the next video. Bye.
A6000 - the cage seems a bit off center, slight issues with accessing battery/memory card door slot
A6300 - the cage seems to fit just fine with access to all the buttons. However, you lose access to the battery/memory card door slot.
