We take a look at how loud Sigma lenses when adapting it to a Sony body using the Sigma MC-11 adapter?
Now this question came about when I posted my Sony a6500 + Sigma 18-35 video. I had a few ask and chime in saying if the autofocus was loud. I know with these newer cameras like Canon’s dual pixel technology and Sony’s continuous af in video, that video autofocus is getting a lot more attention. I know for me personally, I still use manual focus in a lot of situation where I need complete control. However, I’m finding that their is this growing group of folks who don’t want to bother manually focusing, and that’s okay. If the technology is there, why not use it.
So as far as the test, I went ahead and tried out the Sigma 18-35, Sigma 50-100, and the Sigma 35. These are the only Sigma lenses that will adapt well on the MC-11 that I own (with the exception of my Sigma 120-300) that I didn’t want to mount and test.
In terms of noise test, here’s what I got,
The Sigma 18-35 ranged between 45-48db, the Sigma 35 ranged between 47-50db, and the Sigma 50-100 ranged between 45-47db.
When using a native lens, like the Sony 35 f1.8/Sony 50mm f1.8 FE, it ranged from 38-40db, which was significantly quieter.
For reference, if I’m playing a video on my phone, the decibel reading hits about 80db on average. When the room is completely quiet, you get a reading of about 36db.
What does it sound like when recording with the rode video mic pro on top. So I set the rode videomic pro to +20db, and I set the gain on the Sony a6500 to 1. I’m going to let you listen to this on your own.
You can definitely here the autofocusing even if I were to talk to try and overpower the sound, you could here the af motor on the lens.
Here is my conclusion:
I don’t recommend an adapted lens for continuous autofocusing if the microphone is on top of the camera.
If you are using a wireless system or moving the microphone away from the subject, like I do in my videos, then yes, continuous autofocus is good to use.
I would recommend not using continuous autofocus in event like scenarios and recommend users to use their manual focus skills.
