My goal out there was to test out two things, the Sony FE 2x extender as well as spend some time shooting with the Sony 18-105 F4. I typically shoot videos with the 18-105 F4, but I made it my mission to take photos with it through a variety of Track&Field events.
I got their about an hour before the events started, so I just got comfortable doing some practice shots while athletes were still warming up. I realized as I left my house that I forgot to bring an android charging cable. I was using the Sony a7Rii to record my B-roll footage and I had the Meike a6500 grip on the Sony a6500 this time. So I had 2 batteries in the camera and two additional batteries in my bag, so I figured I’d be alright.
I know those of you who do follow my channel know this already, but I don’t shoot professionally. I’m a teacher and also the yearbook advisor at my school and I take pictures as a passion of mine. And since I’m able to go to these events, I test out the equipment. I post the photos for students on my website, and I’m able to share my experience with all of you. Typically I’ll just be out there photographing my school, but I’ll also take photos of other teams.
Sony 18-105 F4
I was actually very impressed with this lens. When combined with the Sony a6500, it makes it a very versatile lens especially for something like track and field. I was using it for the long jump, high jump, pole vault, and I think some track events. I found the autofocus to be spotty initially, but I modified my shooting settings and tweaked my shooting habits, and it started to work really well.
One thing I learned about this lens is that zoom does not work when you are autofocusing with the lens. For example, when I had someone running towards me for the long jump, I wanted to reframe my shot by zooming out. However, I couldn’t do that while I was autofocusing with the lens. The zoom rocker or the actual ring would not work. So this was very interesting. In other words, whatever focal length you’re at, you’re stuck with it during the action you’re trying to capture
My initial thoughts on image quality
From my initial impressions on the image quality, I actually found it acceptably sharp for my style of shooting. It didn’t seem soft. When it hit focus, the images looked sharp. It isn’t going to be sharp like a 70-200GM, but if you look at some of these samples, you’ll see that it’s pretty good. Adding a little bit of sharpness would probably do the trick. I did notice some images appeared slightly soft, so either there are sweet spots on the lens or the image misfocused.
Video with Sony 18-105
Like I mentioned before, the Sony 18-105 is really great for video, and while out at the track meet was really great. You could get enough reach when you needed it and also go wide when you needed it. Autofocus appeared to keep up with the subject, so that wasn’t an issue.
The Sony 2X FE Teleconverter
Alright, so my last VLOG I did, I mentioned that the images were coming out soft with the teleconverter. However, after shooting with the 2X and the 70-200GM, I think I’ve concluded the real problem is autofocus. The camera is actually missing focus. If you look at some of these examples, when the focus hits, the images are actually really good and detailed. However, when the camera is just off slightly, you notice ghosting and softness on the subject.
I’m hoping that the Sony a9 plays well with the extenders and the 70-200GM as honestly, there is no long telephoto prime options available yet for Sony E-Mount.
